Bipolar means that a person experiences both mania and depression in cycles. The mania may be hypomania if it is below the typical mania threshold but still intensified behavior. Bipolar II Disorder is the type of Bipolar that features hypomania.

Bipolar has two types. Bipolar type one involves mania and depression. Type two involves hypomania and depression. Hypomania is a less severe form of mania so basically it is a part of bipolar but it is not bipolar by itself.

Hypomania appears to involve only one mood, whereas bipolar involves two. Hypomania seems to be more desirable because it helps a person be productive. Being bipolar is more scary.

Hypomania is one phase of bipolar type two. People with bipolar type two shift between hypomania (which is a lesser form of mania) and depression. With bipolar type one you would have full blown mania and depression. Hypomania can result in impulsive decisions, rapid brain firings, staying up all night and working nonstop, etc.
