Different ball weights react differently for each bowler. A bowler may get more pin action with a different weight ball depending on how they hook/don't hook the ball. Preference for most is 14-15 lbs because a 16 lb ball because it drives through the pins, not getting the pins to hit each other, and leaving splits.

Bowling balls are sized in terms of weight to account for the strength, ability, and preference of the bowler. A child will use a lighter ball, while a full-grown man will bowl with a much heavier ball.
