Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) allows mobile phone users to roam and change carriers without changing phones. GSM uses digital technology for both signaling and voice. About 80% of all cell phones use GSM. Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is a radio mutltiplexing technology that allows multiple users to share the same bandwith and reduces interference.

In cellular service there are two main competing network technologies: Global System for Mobile Communications and Code Division Multiple Access Cellular carriers including Sprint PCS, Wireless, Verizon and T-Mobile .
