What is the difference between corn meal and grits?

The texture and taste is totally different. Is it just that the "bran" and oil are missing in the corn meal

Grits is made from bleached corn, while cornmeal is unrefined, pure and simple ground corn. Grits when whipped with simmering fluid results in a breakfast side dish of sorts. Corn meal when whipped with simmering fluid results in cornmeal mush or the Italian food, polenta. All said and done, both of these items result in different, buy delicious, end products.

Corn meal is a lot sweeter than grits and is also made up of different grains and rices than grits.
