What is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?

I honestly can't tell a difference by looking at them. What is the difference?

A tortoise is a land dwelling turtle with a high-domed shell and hind legs that resemble those of an elephant. They go to water only to drink and to bathe. Whereas turtle is a broad word used to describe any of a number of turtle species that live on land or in water.

A tortoise is usually larger, and more of a land creature. a turtle can both swim in water and live on land, and are normally smaller.
