Dividends are distributions of property that a corporation pays you because you own stock in that corporation. Return is just the return of your original capital or money you put up front when you originally bought the property.

The dividend can be part of the return. If you have 100 shares of a stock that pays 5. 00 a year in dividend and the stock goes up $1. 00 in that year, your return is $6. 00. If it does not go up at all your return is only the dividend, therefore , $5. 00.
