What is the correct way to write quotes within quotes?

When you are quoting something within a quote there is a special way to write this in English. The proper way is to use the symbols ' ' around the item being said within the quote. As usual, you will use " " to encase the regular quote that you are using in your paper.

If you are American, your main quote uses double quote marks (") and the quote within uses single quote marks ('). If you are British, everything works the other way around. Single for the main, double for the quote within.
