Mountain breezes are due to the fact that lows will preside over the valleys that are at the foot of the mountain. Another possibility is that as air is heated it will rise and a mountain breeze will be created if valley air is heated.

Air masses that go up the near side (the western side in most cases) of mountain ranges drop their moisture on the slopes while going up. As a result, the winds are dry coming down out of the mountains, and are usually warmed by the process.
