This ceremony is private, limited to immediate family and friends. Those who are invited may bring a spouse or children. Invitees may not invite others. No business will be conducted at this wedding. No one may be brought to the wedding who is not known to the bride or groom.

Something along these lines could be appropriate: Join us in celebrating the union of (bride) and (groom) on (date) (time) at (location). Our closest friends and family are also invited to join us at reception following the ceremony at (place). Please RSVP by (date). Using the term closest implies the ceremony is to be small and private.

Saying something like this, the bride and groom wish to have a private ceremony. You have been invited to spend our special day with us, our closest friends and family.

For our day we will be enjoying a secluded ceremony with the love and support of our close family and friends.

Try saying that it is an " intimate affair " that will have a carefully prepared Guest List. For a more direct approach try mailing invitations out to the invited individuals as 'tickets': one (or two for a guest and a spouse) per guest for admission.

Send invitations only to those invited to the ceremony and put "private ceremony, by invitation only" at the bottom. If you are having a larger reception, send invitations to the reception only to those you wish to invite. If all events are private, send wedding announcements to your larger list.

You can say the following or something similar make it real emotional. It can make you sound more intimate than rude. "You are invited to our intimate ceremony among our guests will be the people who are closest to our hearts. Please keep the circle small and personal" Something like that would do for me.
