A brief, handwritten note is the most appropriate way to express sorrow. If the writer has known the child, a written expression of a shared memory is helpful. The essence of any note is words of love, the love that is shared by parents and the child and the everlasting memories and joys of the times together. I've been there.

First, send a beautiful card. Or better, a hand-written letter telling the person how sorry you are for their loss. Make it to the viewing if you can and let the person know how sorry you are and give them a gentle hug. In a few days, call and ask if you can bring them a dish that you prepared.

DO NOT tell them you know how they feel unless you've lost a child yourself. It will just make them feel worse. Send a card in the mail and offer any support. Tell them that if they need anything that you will be there.
