Initial healing can take up to several weeks, and then up to a year for full recovery. Continue rest and elevation whenever possible. As the ankle becomes stronger ambulate it gradually, and exercise it by rotating the ankle and moving it back and forth a few minutes everyday.

Physical therapy can help but depending on the level of damage surgery might be the best option and might provide the best results.

Typical treatment for a mild or moderate soft tissue injury to an ankle consists of five stage method. The first stage is rest. Get off the injured ankle. Then use ice to reduce swelling. Follow that up some sort of support bandage to stabilize the ankle. Lastly, you will want to elevate the ankle.
