You need to pick a relatively high mounting point, usually 10-15 feet high. Be sure that your detector is facing the area you would like to monitor. Some drilling will be necessary for power supply and signal path. Also be sure that nothing obscures the detector within whole angle of operation. Connect very bright lamp that goes on when triggered.

If possible, try to find a location that already has power, such as an existing light. Mount the unit at least 6ft high, and where no obstructions are located in front of the light that could block it's view.

It all depends on the motion detector you buy. They each come with instructions and they all vary by brand and model. But as for location I recommend setting one on your walkway that leads up to the door.
