Various stains can be found at your local hardware store like Lowe's or Home Depot. They both sell high quality stains.

We`re building a workshop/garden shed with a small covered porch and I want to stain the porch floor with a semi-transparent stain. I know to use oil-based. And I`m learning that I`ll probably need to refinish every couple years, unless I`m lucky because it`s a covered porch and only gets morning sun.

A solid stain will provide the greatest protectioin against UV rays. However, it will also hide the grain of the wood. A semi-transparent or semi-solid stain will allow the natural character of the wood to show through but will require more frequent reapplications.

This depends on how much light and other environmental conditions will be affecting the porch. If you'd like a semi-transparent stain, Consumer Reports chooses Wolman's for the top results. If you'd like an opaque stain, Cabot's is your best bet. Depending on the weather conditions, you'll have to refinish your porch every ~2 years.

For my porch, my family chose a cherry-ish stain. The reddish hint added a lot to the overall look, and its 4 years later and no damage has been done.
