You will need to first strip the cabinet of any paint or stain that is already on it. You can then begin applying the stain using either a brush or rag. You should put on one even light coat and allow between 12 and 24 hour to dry before applying a second cote.

The best procedure for cabinet staining is to use a rag. Dip a clean rag in the oil stain then smear on the cabinet's surface. Apply the stain thinly.
