Ideally you would have something local, organic, and priced to your comfort. However, things like cost, company and how much they appreciate wine can and does make a difference. Id go with a californian Merlot, since the high alcohol will help cut the richness of the meat. You could try Chilean for the same effect.

Any merlot wine that has a long and fruity expression. A good acidity backbone will match well with any barbecue sauce. The best option, however, would be a Zinfandel with similar characteristics but with the advantage that it would pair better with the sweet and sour layers in most barbecue sauces.

Actually I wouldn't suggest a straight merlot as they are quite soft flavoured/bodied. I would suggest a mid bodied red which usually means a blend like cabernet merlot.

Any Napa or Central Coast, California will have the nice friut and acidity balance to pair with most barbecue sauce.

I suggest Chateau Ste. Michelle Merlot there is a touch of cherry that seems to go well with the sweet and spicy flavors of barbecue. In addition it is a relatively affordable bottle of wine.
