Sandbow or beach sand is great to use because it have some give to make sure the bricks won't crack under pressure and allow for movement if you live in a seismically active area. It will also fill in nicely around and between the bricks for an even, finnished look.

typically you dig down into the ground. you will need to add gravel to the height where the bottom of the brick will be laid then you fill the top with sand and lay the brick.

Contact someone who does it and ask them the professionals always know better than private people do and do it the way they say do not cut corners.

I like to use either mahogany wood or just bricks in general, it really gives it the needed stability and a classy sort of look.
