If you mean a suit over credit debt you owe, the appropriate response is to show good faith in setting up a payment schedule, or showing good reason why you should not pay, ie, you don't owe the debt. You should offer an upfront payment, and a believeable payback schedule.

Attend the hearing and explain to the judge why you are "judgment proof. " This means that you have no money to pay the debt. You must be able to demonstrate this through disability, unemployment, illness or catastrophe and you must prepare a letter the detail. You can find judgment proof letter templates online.

Any summons will require you to file an answer in writing within the proscribed time period after being served, usually this is 30 days.

The appropriate legal response to a credit lawsuit would be depending upon the circumstances but in general it would be better to request for more timeframe to repay the credit.
