What is the reference to a ring like you'd put on your finger?

The term signet ring refers to how the cells of the carcinoma look like under a microscope, with a shape that reminds of a signet ring.

This is a cancer of the colon. It gets it's name from the risen signet ring like inflammation around the infected areas which contains large amounts of mucin.
