A beginner would only need a set of clubs, preferably as many as you can get to the set, a nice amount of golf balls, some golf tees, and a glove wouldn't be a bad idea.

It is possible to start with a ball, a driver for long distance, and a putter. You may want to practice with these for a while before getting onto a course. Once your son has the ability to hit the ball well, you will want to buy things like a sand wedge and other drivers.

Most people would go out and buy a full set of clubs, but with a beginner it is all about fundamentals. So going and getting a putter, pitching wedge and a seven iron should be all he needs to learn the basics. Once he has adapted a little a driver can be added.

Most beginner sets have a putter, pitching wedge, 7 iron, 5 iron, fairway woord (3 or 5 wood) and a driver (1 wood). He will also need a bag, golf balls, tees and coins or ball markers. Gold shoes are helpful, but not required.
