It is caused by a scale insect that can be spotted in the spring/ summer on undersides of leaves. Adult females with egg sacs on the rear or crawlers hatching soon after ; later feeding off of branches/trunks. Other types are purplish oyster shell and those with brown round bodies. Insecticidal soaps are available at your local garden center.
