Reactive Airways Disease is a catch-all term for a condition in which the airways become irritated under certain conditions. RAD does not imply a specific diagnosis. Children sometimes grow out of RAD; pregnant women sometimes develop it and then are no longer bothered by it after giving birth. There is no definite period for resolution.

RADS was developed to describe an asthma-like reaction to a single exposure to an irritating substance. It is sometimes used synonymously with asthma, and can also be used to describe asthma-like symptoms in an infant. Because of the wide use of the term, it is difficult to pinpoint length.
