They measure all kinds of things, including your snoring activity as well as breathing. Also, they can determine the effectiveness of your sleep time. For example, of the time you are actually sleeping, what percentage are you spending in each sleep stage.

A sleep study is able to tell what sort of brain activity occurs during various stages of sleep. It can also determine how long people are in stages of REM and it helps to understand the nature of insomnia and other disorders. People who suffer from nightmares are sometimes good candidates for a sleep study as well.

Sleep studies are used for diagnosing sleep disorders and to investigate sleep-related symptoms. During the night while you sleep, different machines record data about you. An EEG is used for measuring brain function. Other monitors that are commonly used during sleep studies are ECGs (measures your heart rhythm), EOG (eye movements), EMG (muscle activity), and pulse oximetry.

Studies say, that you can sleep better, if you sleep alone in a bed with fresh made stuff. The air is very important and it is better if you sleep alone. A fresh made bed makes fresh air and so it goes. To wash your body is important as well.
