John P. Cromwell American submariner is mostly remembered for his heroism during WWII. When attacking a Japanese ship Cromwell's submarine was damaged and the surviving crew left it. Cromwell, however, deliberately remained on the submarine while it sank - he didn't want to divulge secret war plans to the enemy.

There are several John Cromwells of note. I'll assume you mean the naval officer John Cromwell. He won the medal of honor during World War II while commanding a submarine. In an attack against the Japanese, Cromwell went down with his boat in order to avoid capture and risk divulging important information he knew about an impending military operation.
