An Individual Retirement Accounts, or IRA, can hold a great variety of financial products including shares of stock in individual companies or shares in stock mutual funds. The financial institution which admininsters your IRA can help you select the stocks or other financial products that are best for your needs.

IRA's can take several forms, from the buying of mutual funds to stock portfolios. Typically when some one talks about an IRA stock, they are referring to a stock held as part of an IRA fund, and which is subject to the IRS rules regarding retirement accounts.

Money set aside in an IRA is invested in order to grow the funds. Some of the money will be invested in stocks, bonds and other securities.

Individual Retirement Accounts are not companies and therefore do not issue shares of stock. You may decide to buy stock in different companies and place that in your IRA, but there is no such thing as "IRA stock. "
