A colonoscopy is a procedure where the colon is visually examined by doctors using a camera attached to a tube which is inserted through the anus. The patient is normally partially sedated by the doctor for this procedure. A large amount of prep is required to be done for this procedure.

The night before the procedure, you will completely cleanse your colon by drinking a preparatory solution. The next morning, as outpatient, a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera will be slowly inserted into the anus through the length of the colon, looking for polyps and cancer.

You will be given medicine to make you sleepy. A long, thin, flexible camera (the colonoscope) will be passed through your anus to evaluate your entire colon from the inside.

They will give you a drug to make you drowsy and not remember but not entirely asleep. Then they will insert a light and camera into your anus, and follow your intestines upwards looking for polyps and growths. You probably will not be sore or anything afterwards.
