That completely depends on the type of employment and the security clearance required. For most private employers this consists of a criminal record check, possibly a local police check as well. For government this may involve interviewing everyone you've ever known for high security positions. If you haven't ever been in trouble I wouldn't worry about it.

It will depend on the industry and position you are applying for. Generally, a background check will include criminal records, checking for felonies or any misdemeanors. Sometimes, an employer may issue a credit check on you as well, which will include any defaults, creditors, bank account, etc. that you may have or have had in the past.

The potential employer will often check your criminal record and any kind of trouble that you may have gotten into. They will also go back and interview all of your former employers to make sure that you did your job and didn't get into any type of trouble. Some also do drug testing.

Your pre-employment background check brings up how long you have worked at the job. your job duties. If you have ever had any problems with anyone and if you quit the job or was fired

Employers can check everything from criminal records to driving to credit history, based on the job being applied for. Most double check information on application and job related histories.
