Duh - do you wanna close it down and convert your fireplace into something else or do you wanna switch from a wood to a gas fireplace. Depending on what kind you have now and how it is constructed the process could be quite complicated.

Converting a fireplace from wood to gas involves several tools, such as a couple of adjustable wrenches, a small screwdriver and a drill. A gas conversion kit is installed after the removal of the wood starter helper, which is usually a 3/4 inch pipe with several small holes in it.

I don't think it is possible as a DIY unless you really have some knowledge about how to use these tools. Try getting a professional to do it. It may be less messy.... . but definitely more expensive.  add a comment

It depends what you had originally. If it's a wood burning fireplace you have to insert a gasline and seal it off. If it's already gas the conversion is easier.

There are a lot of kits available - some can be ordered on the internet online. I've seen kits that will help convert your existing gas or wood fireplace into a gel fuel fireplace - never worry about hauling wood, messy ashes or soot again!
