Keep the roots intact. These plants have been known to break plastic pots so stick with clay or ceramic ones.

Pony tail plants can be repotted if root bound. Pick a pot just one size larger than the existing pot as these plants prefer a little crowding. Use a sandy soil and a non-plastic pot as the ample roots tend to burst plastic containers.

When repotting a ponytail palm, taking great care with their root system is important. It is a desert plant and the roots will grow deep in order to store a water supply. If the ponytail is tall, laying plant down and "rolling" it to release it from original pot helps.

If you are replanting to a larger pot, the drainage should be good. Placing some stone or shells at the bottom before putting in the soil will insure that.

The pot should be big enough to hold the plant and have room for all the roots. It requires good drainage with a mix of soil and sand.

Make sure there is plenty of fertilizer in the soil. You wil also want to add some growth hormones as well in there.

You need to ensure the soil is very loose inside of the pot to allow gases and moisture to flow. When you repot the plant don't leave any large areas in the soil for gas to build up, causing mold and fungi to form. To avoid this, make sure that you press the new soil into the root ball.

The pot should be shallow and wide, not more than 1" wider than the current pot. The soil should be a mix of perlite and peatmoss mix.

When replanting: use good lightweight soil, go up 1 to 2 pot sizes, and plant at the same soil level.
