When distilled beverages are added to wine, it is considered to be "fortified". Any beverage containing ethanol that is produced by distilling fermented grain, is considered a "distilled Beverage. Spirits such as brandy are often added to fortifiy wine into port, while others turn into sherry & vermouth among others.

Fortified wine is fortified with brandy. The brandy employed is usually made from the same grape varietals or is produced in the same region as the elaborated fortified wine. Such is the case with Port wines.
