The iPod is a portable music player and exists since 2001. It is fed with music from a Macintosh or PC via the iTunes software. Modern version allows to watch videos and play games. The iPad was introduced in 2010 and is a slate computer with some limitations. Its main purpose is to surf the web and read e-books.

An iPod is a pocket-sized device primarily used for music and games, where as an iPad is a device that is about the size of a sheet of paper, and has more functionality (such as being used much like a Kindle).

The iPod is Apple's portable mp3 player. It's small and if it can connect to the internet, it can do so only with wifi connection. The iPad is a tablet pc which all the capabilities of an iPod but it is bigger and if you pay a monthly fee it can access the internet anywhere using a 3G satellite network.
