The aquatic salamander appears to have developed smaller forelegs and non-existent hind legs to adapt to its habitat. The evolution of the salamander into an aquatic form helped them survive in their environment. Eventually, salamanders with shorter/no legs survived and reproduced more frequently, which lead to a population that was virtually legless.

After visiting the galapagos islands, Darwin first through that evolution would be an aquatic-only process. He based his assumptions on studies on local salamander populations.

Aquatic salamanders don't need large limbs to swim (the drag slows it down). Therefore aquatic salamanders born with small legs have a higher chance at survival and will be more able to produce offspring. After a very long time, the majority of the population will have no limbs (or very small ones); the trait has been naturally selected.

Aquatic salamanders are limbless. Darwin's hypothesis of natural selection posits that these salamanders developed from salamanders with legs, because the legs were a disadvantage in the environment that the salamanders lived in (water). Therefore, salamanders with shorter or no legs would survive and reproduce more often, and eventually the whole population became legless.

Darwin hypothesized that aquatic salamanders are a good example to show the series of evolution. the survival of the fittest required some of the smaller fishes to leave water and invade land. This is evident in evolution of limbs. Some fishes evolved limbs and started living in swamps. this phenomenon explains the invasion of land by these many non-aquatic beings.
