Traditionally, rugby players wear a collared long sleeved, and often striped collared shirt, shorts, high socks on their calves and cleats in order for them to keep their raction. The term "rugby shirt" has become a very common concept, and it originated from these long sleeved and collared shirts that are worn by rugby players.
