Cholestyram is used to absorb excess bile acid located in the human intestines. It is a bile-acid sequestrant, which means that it binds to the bile located inside the gastro-intestinal tract to prevent its re-absorption. The chemical is water soluable, and typically given to patients orally. It is also used to prevent diarrhea in people suffering from Crohn's disease.

Cholestyramine binds to bile acids in the digestive tract and prevents their being absorbed back into the body. It removes then removes the bile acids from the body by forming insoluble complexes with them in the intestine. It is sometimes given to patients with Crohn's disease to help prevent diarrhea. Its primary side effect, not surprisingly, is constipation.
