The swelling is probably caused by the rush of blood to the site because of irritation. Your immune system is trying to protect you from whatever is causing the rash.

There are many different types of skin rashes, many are accompanied by swelling. Depending on your skin type the extreme irritation from the rash could cause the area to swell.

Your doctor will probably be able to tell you. One cause of a rash swelling would be the hives. This is an itchy, swelling rash. A severe reaction to touching a poisonous plant can result in a rash that swells. Many things you may be allergic to could do the same.
