What is basal metabolism?

My doctor always points out my basal metabolism rate and wants me to lose weight.

Basal Metabolism measures the minimum amount energy required to maintain your body in a resting state while you are awake.

The basal metabolism is the least amount of energy expended by my body while resting but awake. The energy is used up by organs in the body. For example: lungs breathing.

The basal metabolic rate, is the rate at which the body uses energy when at rest. It is the minimum amount of energy the body requires to support all of its vital functions such as heart rate, breathing, kidney function etc. It is usually tested after 12 hours of fasting.

Basal metabolism is your resting metabolism. It's the rate that you naturally burn calories while resting (as apposed to when you're exercising. If it's low, you could need exercise more to make up for it.
