Electrical current in a metal conductor is an action of movement of electrons from a place of higher voltage potential to lower voltage potential. The voltage source causes the potential difference.

Current is the flow of electrons in and around a conductor. The negative particles or electrons travel mostly on the outside of the conductor. That is why a larger wire can handle more current. It has more surface area and less resistance.

Electrons are mainly responsible for carrying electricity. So,in a metal conductor also, it is electrons which cause current to be carried by. If you think its protons or positive ions which carry electrical current,then you are not correct.

An electrical current is also known as flow of electron. electrical current have two phase one is line another is neutral, In different type of metal condutor the current resistance will be different. For Example copper is one of dedicated metal conductor having very low resistance.
