Once certain about terminating a relationship, you should proceed in doing so as soon as possible and in person. Be firm in your decision but compassionate in regard to the other person's feelings. Perhaps, more importantly, don't leave any confusion in your partner's mind about the finality of the break-up.

Just tell him you want to break up with him. Simple. If you're afraid of hurting his feelings, don't be. If you feel the need to explain to him why you want to break up, then do that. Really though, just be forward and direct. Tell him you're breaking up with him.

Tell him that you don't think that you are meant to be together and it is about timing and chemistry, not anything about him specifically.

Under no circumstance should you break up over the phone, through a text or in a public place, unless you suspect he would be violent or aggressive. Choose a private place, just be honest with him about why you need to end things. It may hurt at the time, but not as much if you are dishonest with him.
