A baby photo album is good for the now and future years. A nice toddler plate/bowl/cup set. A quilt is used for years and what you pick out will be different then any other. Play it safe and shop off their gift registry. A silver plated baby picture frame.

A unique gift is having a star named after the new baby. There is an actual website which finds unknown stars and lets you designate their name.

I like to give Organic glass, wood, laundry, and floor cleaners at a baby shower. Organic, green cleaners are important for a baby's environment and cleaners are not something that new parents tend to think of. I've given this to several new mothers and they have all been very appreciative of this gift.

The best shower gift is the unique one so in order to get the right idea you should get to know the mother first. Try spending some time with the person and get to know what does she needs and the best unique gift would be a toy for her new born baby.
