What is a "think tank?"

I keep seeing people on discussion panels who are introduced as being from a think tank.

A think tank is a group of, usually, intellectuals who are tasked with developing solutions to problems. Often times think tanks search out individuals who are at the top of their fields to invite to be members. While the members may have varied educational and work backgrounds, the think tank often works on resolving issues in a specific industry.

A think tank or policy institute employs individuals that conduct research in specific areas (social, military, government, etc.) as requested by organizations/corporations seeking the information.
