A pro-se defendant in a civil suit is one that has chosen to represent himself without the assistance of counsel. Because of infamiliarity with law or process, self representation has certain risks. Courts often due make an attempt to give latitude to pro-se parties. It should noted that in some jurisdictions, artificial entities (ie. corporations) must be represented by counsel.

"Pro se" means that a defendant is representing herself. A "pro se" defendant would be somebody who does not hire an attorney and faces the plaintiff in court without legal representation. If you are going to court by yourself, it is always best to obtain some legal advice from a lawyer before the trial.

A pro se defendant is someone who represents themselves in a lawsuit who has been sued. In general, this is not a great idea as the person probably does not understand the legal nuances necessary to defend themselves.

A Pro Se litigant is an individual who has chosen to represent themselves without a lawyer or legal representation within the Civil courts. This is a method often used when lawyer fees prove to be too steep to accommodate; Pro se suits are generally upheld according to federal statute 42 U. S. C. S 1983.
