If you bring your auto for service and do not pay the amount they are charging in full for the repair. The mechanic has a right to keep your vehicle in lieu of payment. That is a mechanics lien. Once you pay for the repairs + storage fees you can get your car back.

A mechanic's lien is a lien placed by someone who provided services to you and was not paid, such as a mechanic or housing contractor. This kind of lien requires someone to go to court and win the judgment against you. If you do not pay the lien, they will get their money when you sell the house.

A contractor, builder or supplier can apply a mechanic's lien for payment for services rendered that have not been reimbursed. This is filed in the county recorder office. It can only be removed by the one posting it.

A mechanic's lien is a security interest in real or personal property held by a contractor (a carpenter, plumber, architect, etc. ) who worked on that property or supplied materials for that property. If that contractor doesn't get paid, he has a legal claim on the property.
