A functional organizational structure is an organizational structure that has been devised, planned and implemented for optimal function of the group. The functionality of the group depends in many cases on the structure of the group -- who is responsible for who, who reports to who, who ultimately is the person responsible if anything goes south

In an organization, employees in a "functional" structure perform specialized, specific tasks. for example, in a psychotherapy structure, members would perform only psychotherapeutic tasks, not general tasks or broad-based jobs within the organization. This can insure efficiency, but can also impede communication between groups and counteract the efficiency factor.
