I just recently redid our bathroom walls, using a light, light sky blue paint on the top half, and a beadboard along the bottom half. We painted the beadboard along with all the trim in bright white. it created a very simple and clean color contrast.

There are creative ways to paint just about any room. In the bathroom, you may want to consider an ocean color (eg: aquamarine.) Then you could, or have someone with the ability to, paint fish or seaweed or coral on the walls.

Mark off 9" to 12" squares. Starting at the top corner and going across, paint each square a different color (choose 5-7 shades), repeating the sequence. Use painter's tape to get clean, straight edges. Paint trim the darkest shade. Works best on one or two walls, not the whole room.

Once decided on a colour scheme, a border can be added. It could be bright and bold and incorporate some kind of theme. Pick a wall and stencil theme related items down the side of it and around the mirror. The ceiling could be finished with a coarse texture.

What I did was to fake-stucco the walls. They're neat, sort of sand-looking in a nice yellow color to match the beach theme. It's not hard to do, so check out your local hardware store.
