This is commonly seen in new born babies and people whose immunity is low. It is a sign and sympyom of "Oral Thrush". Caused by fungus called Candida found on skin or mucus membrane. It appears as painless white patches on tongue and can spread to cheeks.

A coated tongue is due to the blood being charged with toxins. The tongues resistance and that of other fluids is thus lowered, the saliva loses it's power to stop the growth of organisms and the mouth becomes a incubation chamber that holds bacteria.
