I think it's an antenna. What's it for?

Cantenna is a name usually used for a wireless network antenna that people make themselves from a tin can. The metal cylinder makes it a directional antenna you have to point at the target. You can find tutorials on the internet.

That is a can turned into a directional antenna. It could be made with anything from a coffee can to a pringles can.
