A bridge usually means anything that diverts one connection into multiples. This is usually used in networking, where you might use a router(also called a switch or bridge) to use one Ethernet cable from the wall and get two computers onto the Internet.

A bridge is network component, not a computer component. It connects to physical networks to form a single logical network. Most home users have no use for a bridge, but probabaly need a router instead.
