The rise of communism has had severe economic repercussions on Vietnam. A major land reform has lead to the nationalization of millions of acres of land and the relocation of million of Vietnamese. Furthermore, it has caused increasing hostility with many of Vietnam's Southeast Asian neighbors. This has lead to diverting economic resources to the military.

The result of communists influence in Vietnam has been a country that had not kept up economically and socially with the majority of their neighboring countries. While the countries surrounding Vietnam have grown and become more stable, Vietnam has been left behind and has to play catch-up. Communism may look like a good idea to some but it is not.

Vietnam has suffered from an astronomical crime rate, drug and weapons trafficking, civil unrest, and ethnic violence for decades after the Vietnam War. While things have improved somewhat with mild reform and rising interest by Western countries, it is still a very dangerous country to live in or to visit, and a prominent exporter of drugs.

I would say an ongoing association with the collective might and power of Communist China. The US involvement in Vietnam was part of a military strategy of "containment" to prevent the spread of Communism. Vietnam was caught in the crossfire and eventually drove the US largely out.

The introduction of communism in Vietanm resulted in the divison of the nation into north and south Vietnam. The north following the communism supported by Soviet Union of those days and south following democracy supported by USA. So there was a endless confrontation led to poverty and restless society.
