Always fill your car with the fuel type reccomended by the car manufacturer. In some cases it can cause your car to run incorrectly or even cause failure or severe damage to your cars engine. Particularly Diesel should never be put into a petrol car and visa versa.

It is very bad if you use the wrong fuel type. If you put diesel in a gas car it will not run. If you put an ethanol based one in wont run and it can destroy fuel system parts. If you use a lower octane then recommend you can cause detonation, engine damage, and reduced performance.

Mixing gas and diesel will destroy either type of engine. Putting higher than recommended gas in a gas engine (say, premium in a car that takes regular) won't hurt anything. Putting lower than recommended (say, regular in a car that takes premium) will cause detonation (knocking) and engine failure.
