What happens at a Catholic memorial service?

On the evening before a funeral mass, a rosary prayer vigil is held at the house.This is followed by Mass at church, where the funeral casket is closed .

Assuming it's held in a Catholic church (as opposed to a priest-led service in another venue), the service will include readings, lay responses and a sermon. Eucharist is based on family preference since non-Catholics may not receive communion. Some priests will also allow lay eulogies as part of the service.
