Ravens are in the corvus genus, commonly called corvids. They are very intelligent and many anecdotes can be found to attest to this. The raven has been the subject of much folklore, sometimes considered a bad omen, but other times it is revered as a spirit or a God. Ravens are opportunistic omnivores and have a varied diet.

Poe chose the raven to symbolize "mournful and neverending remembrance", as well as matching the tone of his poem. This poem is about a lost love and the talking raven who taps on the window.

Ravens are related to crows and other black birds. They're much larger than crows. Ravens and crows are very clever at solving problems and can even be taught to talk. Ravens eat just about anything including roadkill. They are common almost everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere and are usually seen alone or in pairs.
